Well where do I start lets get the introduction's out of the way first a brief few words about myself. My name is Ian Shaw I originally come from a little coal mining village (Kirkthorpe) West Yorkshire .
In the late eighties I decided a village life wasn't for me so I decided to move to London to seek my fame and fortune. Safe to say I am still looking for them . in ( 1989 ) I met my wife Jennie a year later we were married and moved out of London to Brentwood in Essex and we have been happily married for the last thirty four years this year.
START OF THE LEUKAEMIA JOURNEY MYELODYSPLASTIC SYNDROME / ACUTE MYELODY LEUKAEMIA
Back in November 2022 I visited my GP complaining of feeling tired all the time, sleeping twelve hours or more a day and still feeling washed out and generally not feeling great so next step was blood tests which came back abnormal but nothing specific . Tested again a month or so later still abnormal this went on for months eventually i was referred to haematology department at my local hospital the consultant at my local hospital was very dismissive in fact discharged me back to my GP .
a few months later still not feeling great back to my doctor more blood tests arranged this carried on for over a year so fast forward to January 2023 I was referred back to haematology department at my local hospital this time i got to see a different consultant and yes more blood tests in fact loads more it was then decided that i should undergo a bone marrow biopsy which i have to say is not the most comfortable procedure .
Tests came back inconclusive go back have another biopsy a few weeks later i was driving my lorry round the M25 a received a call from my consultant it went something like this hello Mr Shaw your results are back you have got MDS/ AML what does that mean i asked basically you have got leukaemia well as you can imagine my world fell apart the way i was told was shocking i was in a state of disbelieve I couldn't take in what i had just been told in hindsight i think it could have been handled better.
So i turned my lorry around straight back to the yard explained to my boss what had just happened his reply was can you take this load up the road for me the reply he got was do you understand what i have just told you my next words to him was fool jog on.
Driving back home how do I explain this to my wife Jennie boy that's one hard conversation its fair to say their was lots of tears and what why us and then alcohol i am not saying alcohol is the answer but that night it was it was decided on that night that i wasn't going to call it cancer or leukaemia Shakira Shakira hips dont lie hence the title of my blog can't help thinking a lot of time had been wasted on blood tests and going round in circles for the best part of two years .
